MDT KNX actuators: switch, shutter, dimming and heating
Actuators in the distribution board do the switching in a KNX system. MDT makes switch, shutter, dimming and heating actuators in sizes from 2 channels up. This guide lists the part numbers and shows how to count channels for a project. Morion Automation is the authorised MDT distributor in India.
The four actuators in most homes
An actuator sits in the distribution board, receives KNX telegrams and switches the load. Four families cover most homes: switch, shutter, dimming and heating. All belong to MDT's Acturio family, described in the MDT KNX catalogue guide. Morion Automation is the authorised MDT distributor in India.
MDT switch actuators: AKS and AKK
AKS actuators switch lighting and sockets with bistable relays for currents up to 16 A and capacitive loads up to 140 µF. Each channel can be switched by hand on the actuator, with lockable manual operation and an LED per channel. Functions include delay, staircase light, scenes, threshold switch and hour meter. The series needs ETS 5 or higher1.

MDT shutter actuators: JAL
JAL actuators drive blinds, shutters and awnings. They offer 1-bit automatic positions, 1-byte absolute positioning, scenes, alarm, central and block functions, a ventilation function and lockable manual operation with an LED per channel1.

MDT dimming actuators: AKD
The AKD-0201.02 (2 channels, 3 SU) and AKD-0401.02 (4 channels, 6 SU) are optimised for dimmable 230 V LED lamps and also list HV and LV halogen with a transformer. Leading-edge or trailing-edge phase control is selectable. MDT lists 250 W, and two channels in parallel give 500 W. Check the MDT datasheet for how the limit applies per channel and per load type before choosing. Other features are active power measurement, plain-text diagnostics, softstart, a day/night function and time-based dimming, including by astronomical sunrise and sunset1.
MDT heating actuators: AKH
The AKH-0400.03, AKH-0600.03 and AKH-0800.03 have 4, 6 and 8 channels in 2, 3 and 4 SU. Each channel drives up to four electrothermic valve drives at 230 V AC and has an integrated PI controller for heating and cooling, so no separate controller is needed. It takes the room temperature from an MDT sensor or push-button, and each channel has a 14-byte plain-text diagnostic1.
How to size actuators for a project
- Count lighting circuits. One switch channel per circuit. Round up to the next size and leave spare channels.
- Count dimmed loads separately. Dimmable LED lamps go on dimming channels, not switch channels.
- Count blinds and shutters. One JAL channel per motor, matched to the motor voltage.
- Count heating or cooling zones. One AKH channel per zone, up to four valve drives per channel.
- Check the board. Add the SU widths to be sure the devices fit the distribution board.
