KNX cable in India: bus cable specs, length limits and installation
Every KNX device on a line shares one twisted-pair bus cable that carries both power and data. The cable type, the line length and the number of devices all have limits, and they are set when the project is planned. This guide sets them out with sources.
What KNX bus cable is
KNX twisted pair (TP) wiring carries both power and data for every device on a line. The bus runs at 30 V DC SELV, supplied by a KNX power supply in the distribution board1. ABB recommends a certified KNX bus cable and gives YCYM 2 x 2 x 0.8 and J-Y(St)Y 2 x 2 x 0.8 as examples of the cable types2. Morion Automation supplies the KNX devices; for cable, see the end of this page.
KNX cable limits for one line
| Limit | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Devices on one line | Up to 64 with a 640 mA power supply | Ekinex datasheet |
| Power supply to the furthest device | Up to 350 m along the cable | Ekinex datasheet, ABB manual |
| Between any two devices | Up to 700 m | Ekinex datasheet, ABB manual |
| Total cable on one line, all branches | Up to 1000 m | Ekinex datasheet, ABB manual |
| Between two power supplies on a line | At least 200 m, and no more than two supplies on one line | ABB manual, Ekinex datasheet |
| Topology | Line, star or tree. A ring is not possible. | ABB manual |
| Bus voltage | 30 V DC SELV | Ekinex datasheet |
The 350 m figure is measured along the cable from the power supply to the furthest device. A line can branch, but all the branches together stay within 1000 m12. If the total is more than one line can carry, the project adds lines with line couplers.
KNX cable and Cat6: why they are not interchangeable
| KNX bus cable | Cat6 network cable | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Made for the KNX bus: carries bus power and data on one pair. | Made for network data. |
| Conductor | Solid conductor of 0.8 mm in the recommended 2 x 2 x 0.8 types. | Generally thinner than the 0.6 to 0.8 mm solid conductor that KNX bus terminals are specified for. |
| KNX recommendation | The recommended types are YCYM 2 x 2 x 0.8 and J-Y(St)Y 2 x 2 x 0.8. | Not a recommended KNX bus cable. |
| Verdict | Use a KNX-certified bus cable. | Not recommended for the KNX bus. |
Installers sometimes ask whether spare network cable can carry the bus. The recommendation is a KNX-certified cable2, and the terminals on KNX devices and power supplies take single-wire conductors of 0.6 to 0.8 mm1. Use Cat6 for the network and a KNX cable for the bus.
Planning and installing KNX bus cable
- Draw the lines first. Decide which devices sit on which line and where each power supply goes, so no line passes 64 devices or 350 m from its supply.
- Avoid rings. A KNX line is a line, star or tree. A loop is not possible.
- Use the right terminals. Strip about 5 mm and clamp the single-wire conductor in the red and black KNX bus terminal.
- Keep the sheath distinct. Where a second 30 V DC auxiliary output is used, use a differently coloured sheath from the bus cable so the two are not mixed up.
- Label both ends. Mark the line number at the board and at each device.
- Follow the electrical code. Ask your KNX-certified integrator how the bus cable should be separated from mains cables on your project.
KNX cable price in India
The price depends on the cable type, the length and how it is supplied. Morion does not publish a price list for KNX cable. Send us the length and the cable type your integrator specifies and we will tell you whether we can supply it or point you to the right route.
