KNX to Matter in India: connecting KNX to Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa
A KNX installation does not talk to Apple Home, Google Home or Amazon Alexa by itself. A KNX to Matter bridge sits between them, so the home apps and voice assistants can control lights, blinds and climate while the KNX system stays as it is. This guide uses the 1Home Server KNX Pro, which Morion Automation distributes in India, as its example.
What a KNX to Matter bridge does
Devices on a KNX bus speak KNX. Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa speak Matter, an IP-based standard from the Connectivity Standards Alliance that runs over Wi-Fi and Thread, with Bluetooth Low Energy used to commission devices3. A KNX to Matter bridge translates between the two: it reads the KNX group addresses, shows lights, blinds and climate as Matter devices, and lets the home apps and voice assistants control them.
The 1Home Server KNX Pro has a built-in KNX IP interface with four KNX IP tunnels1. You upload the ETS project file and the server groups the group objects into devices automatically, so the KNX system stays as it is. Morion Automation is the authorised 1Home distributor in India.
Which apps work, and which need a hub
| App | Hub | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1Home App | No hub | iOS and Android. Works on the home network without internet. |
| Apple Home | Hub needed | An Apple TV, HomePod or HomePod mini. |
| Google Home | Hub needed | A Google Home, Google Home Mini, Nest Mini, Nest Audio, Nest Hub, Nest Hub Max or Nest Wifi Pro. The Google Home app needs internet. |
| Amazon Alexa | Hub needed | In beta. 1Home suggests keeping an Alexa setup under about 50 devices. |
| Samsung SmartThings | Hub needed | In beta. |
| Home Assistant | Hub needed | Suits small installations. |
Every app except the 1Home App connects through a hub on your home network. Alexa and SmartThings are in beta. Voice control, such as Siri through Apple Home, Google Assistant through Google Home and Alexa, needs internet1. In the Alexa app the KNX devices appear grouped by type and room, and you can control a room or one device2.
Limits to plan around
- KNX to Matter: up to 250 devices go to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and the other Matter apps. A KNX project can have more devices than that, so choose which ones to expose1.
- Into 1Home: the number of KNX devices brought into 1Home is not limited1.
- Matter to KNX: up to 100 Matter devices can be given KNX group addresses and programmed in ETS like any other device. A Matter bridge such as Philips Hue counts as one physical device1.
- Automations: up to 150 automations on the Server KNX Pro.
- Internet: the server runs locally and KNX and Matter control do not need internet. Voice control, the Google Home app, remote access and the ETS auto-detection feature do1. There are no monthly fees1.
What to have ready before you start
- The ETS project file. The server uses it to detect and group devices. A 1Home dashboard in the browser does the setup and needs no ETS licence.
- A device list. Decide which lights, blinds and climate zones should reach the home apps, to stay within 250.
- A hub for each app. For Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa you need one of the hubs in the table.
- Room and device names. The names in your KNX project become the names people speak to the assistant.
MDT and other KNX brands
The bridge works on the KNX system as it stands, so lights, blinds and climate controlled by MDT actuators and by other KNX brands appear in the home apps in the same way once they are grouped as devices.
